Puffin Academy Best Practices and FAQ

As a lot of digital educational content and resources today, CompassLearning solutions contain learning activities that require Adobe Flash Player.  As you may have already experienced, Adobe Flash Player is not supported and available for iPad and Android tablets.  As a result, we recommend using Puffin Academy for iPad or Puffin Academy for Android to access CompassLearning solutions from those devices.  Our long-term content strategy is to migrate to the newer platform-independent HTML5 technology, which will allow you to access our solutions using the native browser on an iPad or Android tablet.  Until we get there, Puffin Academy is the only viable solution to access CompassLearning solutions from an iPad or Android tablet.  Since this experience may not be as optimal as a PC or Mac, we have documented some best practices and frequently asked questions below.  As always, if you need assistance, feel free to contact our Support & Services team via chat, email (support@compasslearning.com) or phone (800-678-1412).

Best Practices

Bandwidth Requirements

Each device being used to access CompassLearning requires a sustained 512 Kbps of bandwidth.

Verify adequate bandwidth is available for the number of students using Puffin Academy to access CompassLearning:

Consult with your IT team to determine the maximum number of users that can be connected to the wireless access point (WAP) near your classroom and beyond that, verify that your school and district has adequate Internet bandwidth.

Based on the findings above, you may have to upgrade your WAP, Internet connection or stagger usage allowing only the maximum number of students as supported by your WAP and/or Internet connection.

Puffin Academy App Settings

Although not required, these settings may provide the most optimized experience while using Puffin Academy.  To get to these settings, click the 3 dots on the top right within the Puffin Academy app and select Settings:

For iPad:

Settings
Restore Tabs - Off
Request Desktop Site - On
Ignore Mute Switch - On
Zoom on Double-Tap - Off
Save Password - Off

View
Show Network Speed - Off
Touch Visual Effects - On
Keyboard/Mouse Button - On
Floating Menu Button - On
Show Tab List Bar - On

Device and Puffin Academy App Usage

Ensure that the device is used in landscape or horizontal mode.

Before each use or beginning of a session, ensure that the Puffin Academy app is completely "closed" or "killed" and restarted.

If the "Ignore Mute Switch" setting is not set to 'On', ensure that the mute switch on the device is not active (ensure that the sound for the device is on).

If the "Restore Tabs" setting is not set to 'Off', ensure that all unnecessary or old tabs are closed before starting session.  After session starts, leave CompassLearning login page tab open. Limit the number of open tabs/windows within Puffin Academy during CompassLearning use.  CompassLearning/Odyssey should only need two tabs open (login page and student dashboard/learning activity screen).  To close tabs:

  • If "Show Tab List Bar" setting is 'On', simply click the 'X' on each unnecessary tab before logging in to CompassLearning.

  • If "Show Tab List Bar" setting is 'Off', select the windows icon (with the number in it) on the top right of the app, then click the 'X' on each unnecessary open tab/window until they are all closed.

Do not use the back button on the top left within Puffin Academy. To get back to the CompassLearning/Odyssey student dashboard, use Exit icon within the learning activity (top left of the activity) to exit activity and return to the student dashboard screen.  To get back to a previous screen, use the "breadcrumbs" at the top of the CompassLearning/Odyssey student dashboard

Do not use the X button on the top left within Puffin Academy. To exit CompassLearning/Odyssey, use the Logout icon on the top right of the CompassLearning student dashboard.
